Only 1.5h away from Belgrade are three precious historical sights – Mammoth Park, the Roman archeological site Viminacijum dating to the 1st century, and a Serbian medieval fortress.
Our first stop is Viminacium, an archeological site dating to the 1st century BC. Excavation on this site began in the 19th century and it opened to the public for the first time 10 years ago. It is said that Viminacium has the same historical importance as the world famous site of Pompeii in Italy, due to its excellent preservation and its role as the capital of Upper Moesia. This underground city was a military camp. Archeologists are currently excavating the Roman cemetery and Roman baths that we are going to visit.
Just few minutes walk from Viminacium is the Mammoth park, said to be the biggest in Europe. Here you will see part of a mammoth skeleton, Vika, which was discovered in this area as well as remains of other mammoths that are hundreds of thousands years old. After our visit, approximately 1.5h, we have an option to take a break in the cafe on site.
Our final stop on the tour is in the city of Smederevo, to see the medieval fortress that was built in the 15th century. It represents the highest achievement of medieval Serbian military architecture. Following this portion of the tour, we will break for lunch before returning to Belgrade.
